New Virginia Tech basketball coach James Johnson knew this job wasn’t going to be easy and with the transfer of a key recruit he was right.
Last week as prized recruit Montrezl Harrell decided that he no longer wanted to be apart of the program and asked for his release. The 6’7 230 pound forward out of North Carolina was expected to contribute to a Virginia Tech frontcourt that already lost Victor Davilla to graduation and Dorian Finney-Smith to a transfer.
It is unknown whether the Hokies have granted Harrell’s release but it’s extremeley likely that he will have his pick of schools when the time comes.
The loss of Harrell means that Johnson needs to add another big man to the fold as the Hokies are once again down to eight scholarship players and this is before the customary transfer/injury that fans have become accustomed to.
All is not lost for the Hokies as it was just announced that freshman Adam Smith, a guard from UNC-Wilmington will transfer to Virginia Tech. The 6’1 161 pound point guard started all but two games last season and averaged 13.7 points a game for the Seahawks.
