Hokie fans looking for some promising news can thank the social network for its contributions last night.
To start, JC Coleman talked to Hokies ‘N’ Hoos last night about getting to know his fellow 2012 classmates and gave us a few recruiting updates in the process. According to Coleman, he has been “constantly in a few guys’ ears” about either committing to the Hokies or “making sure they stay on board.”
Some uncommitted prospects Coleman has talked to include 4-star athlete prospect Joel Caleb and 4-star defensive tackle prospects Korren Kirven and Sheldon Day.
Coleman feels the Hokies might be the top choice for 2 out of those 3 names, stating, “I feel very confident with [Korren] Kirven and [Joel] Caleb. [Sheldon] Day is a lil’ tough.”
Coleman added, “I feel great on Caleb; he really likes VT. And honestly, I think Kirven is a lock. He just wants to take visits.”
Kirven and Caleb are amongst the top-10 prospects in the state of Virginia with Caleb listed as the number one overall prospect in the commonwealth on Rivals. Day is ranked #3 overall in the state of Indiana on the same database. All three athletes have piled on offers from schools in the ACC, SEC, and Big Ten. UVA is amongst those schools offering scholarships to Kirven and Caleb.
Coleman states that he is talking to possible recruits on his own terms, saying, “It’s just something I want to do for the team because I want to play with the best guys. It’s not just on the coaches to recruit. I feel like the committed players have to also.”
Coleman is not just talking to top-level prospects. He is also building friendships and bonds with players like Mario Nixon, JaWand Blue, Der’Woun Greene, and Deon Clarke.
As Hokie and Hoo fans know, there are rumors that Nixon could switch his allegiance to UVA to join his teammates Kwontie Moore, Courtnye Wynn, and Wilfred Wahee. However, Nixon has told Hokies ‘N’ Hoos over twitter that there was no truth to the initial rumors of his reversal only a few days ago.
Even if Nixon ends up recanting his commitment to Virginia Tech, it is a promising sign that the Hokies’ 2012 class is already forming a nucleus of players.
Coleman shares the opinion of many when he said, “We’re having a great class so far.”
Transitioning from football to basketball, Allan Chaney announced over twitter, “I have been cleared by the doctor in Philly! Now I have to wait to see what Tech says! So when I say I am deff playin, I am.”
Now comes the waiting game to see if the Virginia Tech administration will also give the all clear for Chaney to suit up and play in Cassel Coliseum this winter.
Chaney will be a redshirt junior if he plays this upcoming season. Even in the unlikely event that the school will not allow Chaney to play, we here at the site would like to express our delight in hearing Chaney’s heart problem is now a thing of the past.
